LABORATORY 1 - Enzyme Catalysis
Thursday, October 19, 2017
TMEC 128 All students: Tutors join students in the lab.
Labs: 343 & 344

Hi Group 9!

I'm Isaac Plant, your tutor for the Hinton Scholars Lab. Having heard great things about all of you, I'm looking forward to meeting you today! I work in a field called Synthetic Biology which works on engineering living things to improve human health, the environment, or really anything you an think of. That might sound a bit scary, as if we are doing weird science on humans, but most the the work in my lab is focused on micro-organisms. If you want to read a little bit about what we do, you can look at our lab website: Silver Lab Research. Also, feel free to ask me about any of the projects we do (or, really, any biology)!

Today we will be talking about enzymes. Enzymes are a fundamental building block of life, and how specific enzymes work and what they do are important biological questions. Enzymes are biological catalysts. In other words, they are biological molecules that increase the rates of chemical reactions. You will be exploring one example of this in lab today, and we will see many others throughout the upcoming labs.

One reminder: make sure to check the wiki before each lab! It will significantly improve your comfort with the material, and will give you a chance to see which concepts you might want to ask about.

See you in lab!

LABORATORY 2 - Photosynthesis
Thursday, November 9, 2017
TMEC Tutoring room: 111
Labs: 343 & 344

Hey everyone! Today, we are going to be studying photosynthesis, one of the most significant evolutionary developments in the history of life on earth. There is a fair amount of technical vocabulary in the handouts, so please highlight any words you do not know so that we can discuss them. We will be reviewing last weeks lab as well, so bring any questions you may have on that.

LABORATORY 3 - Cellular Respiration
Thursday, December 21, 2017
TMEC Tutoring room: 111
TMEC Learning Studio 106 for Lab

Today is cellular respiration! Instead of focusing on the science concepts during the tutoring session, we are going to drill down into the lab procedure. I think this will help the lab go more smoothly, so you can focus on how the experiments illuminate the concepts you are studying instead of getting bogged down with problems with the protocol. We will be trying out using nearpod, which requires a phone, tablet, or computer to use.

LABORATORY 4 - Transpiration

Thursday, January 18, 2018
TMEC Tutoring room: TBA

Hey everyone, today is transpiration! I realize you haven't had a chance to review this, so we will go over the very basics, but we are mostly going to focus on the protocol so everything runs smoothly in lab.

LABORATORY 5 - DNA Analysis with PCR & Gel Electrophoresis
Thursday, January 15, 2018
TMEC Tutoring room: TBA

Hey all,
Reminder that we are meeting in the lab today to start our PCRs, then on to tutoring. See you soon!

LABORATORY 6 - Transformation
Thursday, March 22, 2018
TMEC Tutoring room: TBA
